Global supply chain disruptions are making headline news. One of the items affected and continues facing a serious shortage for another 12 to 18 months, is the raw material used for producing silicone sealants. This forces a search for alternatives. The good news is that the entire AnchorTech line of adhesives and sealants Pettit Marine Paints provides improved technology and value than traditional silicones. Better yet, these are available at marine retailers throughout the Caribbean, and if not in stock, can be brought in quickly to meet boater’s needs.

Little did Antigua & Barbuda’s Karl James know when he started sailing at age 12, the sport would take him to the throne room at UK’s Windsor Castle for a high honor bestowed by the Prince of Wales. This seemingly fairytale, which acknowledges James’ thirty-plus years of dedicated service to Sailing and National Development in the two-island Caribbean nation, came true on February 8, when at a formal investiture ceremony, he received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

The trouble with clear varnish!

If you want your varnish to be like it is seen on the world’s top yachts, you need a clear varnish. The clearer the varnish the more the grain of the (hopefully ) great wood it is covering will stand out. However, the problem with clear is also that if that clarity shows something else like bits of old varnish or dirt, the effect will be exactly the opposite to what is intended.

How do you use Clear Varnish

Clear varnishes are readily available and Epifanes varnish is one of the top favorites. However, if...

Every time I get discouraged by recent events—global warming, the rise of fascism, the sudden return of racism as a well-trodden path to political power, and the almost instantaneous waning of American international prestige—I go sailing. That’s right, I mess around in boats. I don’t have to sail far. I don’t have to sail aboard a fancy nor expensive vessel. All I have to do is get out on the water and trim my sails—Mother Ocean kindly does the rest.

I don’t need to study Zen—I sail.

Of course, I realize my going sailing doesn’t help the world. It only helps...

Do you get the bitter-sweet passage blues?

I do. Even after 10 years of cruising, leaving a cozy anchorage for a longer passage stresses me out—unless it’s a dreadful place I can’t wait to get away from. It’s a strange mix of indecisiveness (watching ever-changing weather forecasts on an hourly basis), anxiety about what could go wrong and worries that there might be too much wind for a comfy ride or (even worse) not enough wind, a certain wistfulness to leave a place and people we’ve grown fond and of course pleasant anticipation of a new destination ahead.

Vibrations loosen...
