The numbers are sobering. Some 86% of fatal boating accident victims who drown are not wearing a life jacket, and 77% percent of deaths happen on boats where operators have no boating safety instruction. Operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed and machinery failure rank as the top five contributing factors in boating accidents, according to the 2020 Recreational Boating Statistics by the U.S. Coast Guard. While many accidents happen close to shore and on small recreational craft or powerboats, sailing offshore such as cruising to the Caribbean from...

A lifetime of sailing, much of it within the Caribbean, is the subject of a new biography titled Offshore High, that profiles the husband-and-wife team of Steve and Doris Colgate. Steve, an Olympian, America’s Cup Sailor and National Sailing Hall of Fame Inductee, founded Offshore Sailing School in 1964 in Fort Myers, FL. Doris joined Steve in running the company in 1969.

“We have been teaching sailing and cruising in the Caribbean since 1974 when we opened our first school location there at Treasure Isle Hotel in Road Town, Tortola,” says Colgate. “We started the...

I recently learned about Spatchcock cooking and it is great for on a boat. Spatchcocking is definitely a strange name. The wacky term came from Ireland. This technique involves splitting the chicken by removing the backbone so you can flatten it, resulting in crispier skin and even, quicker cooking. We would probably call it butterflied!

A yacht charter in the Caribbean is a spectacular way to socially distance and savor a five-star vacation too. While the global yacht charter market saw a sharp decline in 2020 due to the pandemic, the easing of lockdown restrictions, greater vaccination rates and bounce back in overall tourism is poised to put the market at pre-Covid levels, possibly higher, by 2022. What’s more, the global yacht charter market is poised to grow by double digits through 2028, according to the February 2021-released report, Yacht Charter Market Size, Market Share, Application Analysis, Regional Outlook,...

Wahoo was the word on the dock Sunday as over eighty anglers aboard 22 boats weighed in 40 wahoo in the Budget Rent-A-Car Wahoo Windup Tournament, hosted by the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club. In the end, St. Thomas’ Lawrence Aubain caught the Largest Wahoo, a 57.5-pounder, from aboard the 32-foot center console Mixed Bag 2, with captain Hugo Prada at the helm.

“We got some bites early but missed them. It was after that we caught the 35-pounder up on the Lange Bank off St. Croix,” says Prada, recapping the successful day of fishing including the first wahoo caught by Aubain...

Admittedly, we didn’t have any gold mixing rums in our cabinet but it was about time we did. Gold or amber rums have been aged in wooden barrels for a shorter duration than others, to give the rum its color. This provides for a richer flavor profile over the whites we have recently reviewed. The two big names in gold rums are Mount Gay Eclipse and Bacardi Gold.

Mount Gay Eclipse vs. Bacardi Gold… Which one is better?

Mount Gay, out of Barbados, was founded in 1703 and is the oldest rum...
